Xenon with a fluorine donor. The working molecule, XeF, does not exist on the shelf: it only assembles inside the discharge, holds together for nanoseconds while excited, radiates and falls apart. Most of that light is near ultraviolet, so the saturated blue and violet in these frames is the visible edge of it, and the ring drifts in colour as the drive shifts the balance between plain xenon and the excimer.
